FAQs

What's the deal with electric bike laws in Australia?
In February 2023, the government amped up the rules, giving a nod to the NSW Minister for Metropolitan Roads. The max power limit for e-bike motors on public roads was cranked up from 250 watts to 500 watts, thanks to the Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Electric Skateboards and Bicycles) Regulation 2023. So, you’ve got more juice for the ride while still staying within the lines.

Are electric bikes legal in Australia?
Absolutely! Our bikes roll out of the box speed-restricted to 25km/h (250 watts), making them street-legal across Australia. Each state has its own spin on e-bike regulations, so we suggest checking out your local laws to stay in the know. Our bikes come with a throttle and isolator, letting you switch between public mode and private mode. Want to unlock the full speed for private property fun? Just sign a compliance form, and you're good to go.

Do your bikes comply one of these standards?
Yes! Our bikes meet one of three standards as per the current laws:

  • AS15194:2026
  • EN15194:2017+A1:2023
  • UL2849

Ride easy knowing your Cooly Bike is built to the highest safety and performance standards!

How fast do the Cooly Bikes go?
Our electric bikes are set to cruise at 25km/h to keep things legal on public roads. But if you’re riding on private property and want to kick it up a notch, you can unlock it to hit up between 45km/h - 56km/h.

How far can I ride on a single charge?

Answer: Range depends on several factors, but here's what you can expect from our models:
  • Cooly Ripper: Up to 55km with the 48V 18.2Ah battery
  • Cooly Cruiser Pro: Up to 55km range with 18.2Ah battery
  • Cooly Cruiser: Approximately 45-50km (varies by battery configuration)
  • Cooly Breeze: Up to 55km
  • Cooly Grom: Up to 35km
  • Cooly Bolt: Up to 55km+ (our longest-range model)
Real-world factors affecting range:
  • Rider weight and riding style
  • Terrain (beach sand vs. city streets vs. hills)
  • Weather conditions (headwinds reduce range)
  • Assist level used (throttle-only vs. pedal assist)
  • Tire pressure and maintenance
Pro tip: On the Gold Coast's flat coastal paths, you'll get maximum range. Expect 15-20% less range when tackling hinterland hills.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

Answer: Most Cooly Bikes batteries charge fully in 4-6 hours from empty using the standard charger included with your bike.
Charging timeline:
  • 0-50%: Approximately 2-2.5 hours
  • 50-80%: Additional 1.5-2 hours
  • 80-100%: Final 1-2 hours (charging slows for battery protection)
Best practices:
  • You don't need to fully drain before charging
  • Partial charges are actually better for battery longevity
  • Charge in a cool, dry location (important in our humid Gold Coast climate)
  • Avoid charging immediately after a long ride - let the battery cool first

Why does my battery level drop 2 bars so quickly?
No worries, This is totally normal! We’ve removed the minimum power limit to help protect your battery’s lifespan, so it might show a quick drop at first. You’ll still get up to 40km of pure electric power! If you’re feeling that battery anxiety, you can always check the exact level by pressing the button on top of the battery or by quickly pressing the power button a couple of times while your Cruiser’s on.

How long will my battery last before needing replacement?

Answer: Cooly Bikes batteries are designed for 800-1000+ charge cycles, which typically means 3-5 years of regular use for most riders.
What this means practically:
  • If you charge twice weekly: 4-5 years of reliable performance
  • Daily commuters: 2-3 years before noticeable capacity reduction
  • Weekend riders: 5+ years of excellent performance
Signs your battery might need attention:
  • Range drops below 60% of original capacity
  • Takes significantly longer to charge
  • Battery doesn't hold charge when not in use
Remember: All Cooly Bikes come with a 1-year warranty, and we stock replacement batteries for all our models.

Can I ride my eBike if the battery dies?

Answer: Absolutely! All Cooly Bikes function as regular bicycles when the battery is depleted.
What to expect:
  • The bike will feel heavier than a standard bike (typically 22-28kg depending on model)
  • All mechanical functions work normally (brakes, gears, lights if they have backup power)
  • You can still pedal home comfortably, just with more effort
Emergency tips:
  • Switch to the lowest gear to make pedaling easier
  • Plan routes with battery buffer - don't rely on using 100% capacity
  • Consider carrying the charger for longer trips where charging points are available.

How can I maximize my battery life and range?

Answer: Here are proven strategies to get the most from your Cooly Bikes battery:
For maximum range per charge:
  • Use pedal assist instead of throttle-only when possible
  • Start with lower assist levels (1-2) and increase as needed
  • Maintain proper tire pressure (check monthly)
  • Keep a steady pace rather than frequent acceleration/braking
  • Plan routes to minimize headwinds when possible
For long-term battery health:
  • Store with 50-80% charge if not using for extended periods
  • Avoid extreme temperatures (don't leave in hot cars or cold garages)
  • Charge regularly - don't let it sit empty for weeks
  • Clean battery contacts occasionally with a dry cloth
Gold Coast specific tips:
  • Rinse bike (avoid battery area) after beach rides to prevent salt corrosion
  • Store indoors during storm season to protect from humidity
  • Take advantage of our flat coastal paths for maximum efficiency.

Where are your e-bikes made?
We design every Cooly Bike right here in sunny Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. The manufacturing happens over in China, where we make sure everything’s up to our chill, high-quality standards.

Are your e-bikes water-resistant?
Yep, they are! Just don’t take them for a swim or go hosing them down when cleaning. A little water’s fine, but let’s keep them dry where it counts.

Do e-bikes need regular maintenance?
Sure thing. We recommend giving your ride a service once a year or every 2000km, whichever comes first. It keeps everything running smooth, just like your ride down the coast.

Why is my shock creaking?
If there’s a creak, it’s likely the preload adjustment collar (that thing you can twist at the bottom of the spring). Just tighten it up, and the creak will vanish!

What is the clicking noise I can hear when going over bumps or bouncing on the seat?
If you hear this click, it’s likely coming from the lower frame pivot point, there is a bolt there that will need to be loosened slightly, add some lube and the noise will vanish!

Where can I take my Cooly Bike for repairs?
For general wear and tear, any local bike shop should be able to sort you out. If you’re having trouble with specific parts, give us a shout. If it turns out to be a manufacturing issue, we’ve got you covered under warranty during the warranty period.

What pressure should my tyres be?
You should inflate your tyres to a MAXIMUM of 20 PSI. Anything over 20 PSI could cause the tube to pop, which may lead to serious personal injury. You've been warned!

Can I become a Cooly Bike Dealer or Distributor?
Absolutely! Drop us a request through our contact form, and we’ll get back to you to chat about the details.

What’s the weight limit for your bikes?
Our bikes can comfortably carry up to 150kg. So load up and enjoy the ride!
